"Never Gonna Fall in Dearest Again" is a song co-written and recorded by American pop rock artist Eric Carmen. It was released equally the second unmarried from Carmen'south self-titled debut solo album, the song peaked at number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in June 1976, remaining in the Summit twoscore for ten weeks.[1] The song reached number one on the Billboard Like shooting fish in a barrel Listening nautical chart. In Canada, information technology was a number-one striking on both charts.[2] [three]

The melody of "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" is based on the third motion (Adagio) from Symphony No. ii by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

On his 2nd solo LP, Boats Against the Current, Carmen had a subsequent Top 40 hit entitled "She Did It", a happy respond to the loneliness and lovelessness described in this song and its equally melancholy predecessor, "All By Myself".

Television performance [edit]

Carmen performed "Never Gonna Fall in Love Over again" and his prior striking, "All By Myself" on The Midnight Special television program on July 23, 1976 (flavor 4, episode 37). The prove was hosted by The Spinners.[4]

Australian singer songwriter Mark Holden recorded and released a version April 1976 as his debut single. The song was a commercial success, peaking at number 13 on the Kent Music Report.[12] [13]

Background and release [edit]

Mark Holden released his debut studio anthology Dawn in Darkness in 1975. Consisting entirely of original songs, the anthology was a commercial failure, selling approximately 2,000 copies[14] In April 1976 Holden received a call from Colin Petersen, EMI Music Australia'due south A&R, who suggested he cover "Never Gonna Fall in Dear Again". In his 2017 autobiography, Holden said recording information technology "was a chance for me to have a hit". Holden promoted the song by performing the rail on Countdown, where he performed the track while handing out carmine carnations to the audition. It became an infamous functioning which led to Holden'southward nickname of "The Carnation Kid"[15]

Unlike "All by Myself," Carmen'due south version of "Never Gonna Autumn in Love Again" was not released in Commonwealth of australia and therefore did not chart. Withal, Dana reached #31 in the U.k. in 1976 with the vocal.[xvi] Her British release charted meantime with Carmen'due south and Holden's versions.
